Tucked into the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains at the edge of Newhall, Placerita Canyon Nature Center is one of the Santa Clarita Valley's most treasured family destinations. It combines an educational nature center, live animal exhibits, easy hiking trails, and a genuine piece of California history — all completely free to visit.
"I've been bringing my kids to Placerita Canyon for over 15 years," says Sam Silver, SCV local and veteran REALTOR. "The Saturday animal presentations are a tradition in our house. It's the kind of place where kids can see a real hawk up close, touch a tortoise shell, and learn about the canyon ecosystem — all before lunch. And it's free. You can't beat that."

Hours & Admission
Nature Center Building: Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Closed Mondays and Christmas Day.
Park Grounds: Open daily, sunrise to sunset. Seasonal hours: March through October, 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM. November through February, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Admission: Completely free. Parking is also free in the main lot. Donations are welcome and support the nature center's educational programs and animal care.

Address: 19152 Placerita Canyon Road, Newhall, CA 91321.
From I-5: Take the Lyons Avenue / Placerita Canyon Road exit. Head east on Placerita Canyon Road for about 3 miles. The nature center entrance is on your left just past the Oak of the Golden Dream monument.
Parking: A large free parking lot is available at the nature center. On busy weekends it can fill up by late morning, so arriving early is recommended.
Free Programs
Weekly Programs at the Nature Center
One of the best things about Placerita Canyon is the free weekly programming. These programs are led by knowledgeable docents and naturalists, and they make the nature center a regular destination for families across the SCV.
Family Nature Walk
Every Saturday · 11:00 AM
A guided walk through the canyon led by a volunteer docent. Learn about native plants, local wildlife tracks, the geology of the San Gabriel foothills, and the history of the area. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The walk lasts about 45 minutes to an hour and covers easy terrain.
Native Live Animal Presentation
Every Saturday · 1:00 PM
This is the highlight of any visit. The nature center's animal ambassadors are brought out for up-close presentations — owls, falcons, hawks, snakes, tarantulas, tortoises, lizards, and more. A knowledgeable docent shares facts about each species, their habitat, and conservation. Kids (and adults) love this program.
Bird Walks
First & Second Saturdays · 8:00 AM
Early morning guided bird walks through the canyon. Placerita Canyon is a hotspot for birdwatching -- expect to see acorn woodpeckers, California quail, scrub jays, red-tailed hawks, and migrating songbirds. Bring binoculars if you have them.
Books & Hikes
Fourth Sundays · Sep-May
A story time and nature walk combo for young children (ages 3-7). A docent reads a nature-themed picture book, then leads kids on a short hike exploring the themes from the story. Runs September through May.
Community Nature Education Series
Third Sundays · 2:00 PM
Monthly presentations on specialized topics -- California geology, native plant gardening, wildlife rehabilitation, local history, and more. Each month features a different expert or topic.
Nature Tots
Ages 3-6 · Check calendar
A dedicated program for preschoolers and their caregivers. Nature-themed stories, crafts, and short outdoor explorations designed for the youngest nature lovers. Check the nature center's calendar for current dates and times.
Exhibits
Inside the Nature Center
The Nature Center building itself is a gem. After undergoing renovations in recent years, the museum-quality exhibits are better than ever. Here is what you will find inside:
Ecosystem Dioramas
Three detailed dioramas showcase the canyon's distinct ecosystems: oak woodland, chaparral, and riparian (streamside). Each features taxidermy specimens of local wildlife in their natural habitat settings.
Freshwater Aquarium
A wall-sized aquarium featuring native freshwater fish and aquatic life from the Santa Clara River watershed. A favorite with kids who press their noses to the glass watching the fish swim.
Bird Viewing Area
An observation deck with spotting scopes overlooks the canyon. Watch for acorn woodpeckers, California quail, western bluebirds, and red-tailed hawks. The feeders outside the window attract birds year-round.
Insect & Reptile Displays
Glass cases showcase preserved specimens of local insects, spiders, reptiles, and amphibians. Learn to identify the creatures you might encounter on the trails.
Live Snake & Tarantula Exhibit
Live resident snakes (including a California kingsnake and a gopher snake) and tarantulas are on display in secure glass terrariums. The docents are happy to answer questions about these often misunderstood creatures.
California Gold Discovery Exhibit
Placerita Canyon is the site of California's first documented gold discovery in 1842 -- six years before Sutter's Mill. The Oak of the Golden Dream is just a short walk from the nature center. A small exhibit inside tells the story.
Hiking
Trails at Placerita Canyon
Nature Trail (Easy Loop)
0.5 miles · 15-20 minutes · Paved & gravel
The loop trail starts right behind the nature center. It is an easy, mostly flat path that winds through oak woodland and along the seasonal creek. Interpretive signs along the way identify native plants and explain the canyon's ecology. Perfect for toddlers and strollers. This trail also takes you to the Oak of the Golden Dream.
Canyon Trail (Moderate)
1.5 miles one way · 45 min · Dirt trail
For a longer hike, continue past the nature center loop into the upper canyon. The trail follows Placerita Creek deeper into the San Gabriel foothills, passing through increasingly dense oak and sycamore groves. The trail connects to the wider Placerita Canyon State Park trail network for those who want a full day of hiking.
Sam's Tips for Visiting Placerita Canyon
Plan for Saturday
Saturday is the best day to visit. Arrive by 10 AM, do the 11 AM Nature Walk, have a picnic lunch, and catch the 1 PM Live Animal Presentation. That's your full morning and early afternoon sorted.
Bring a Picnic
There are shaded picnic tables near the nature center and plenty of grassy spots along the creek. Pack lunch and make a day of it. No food is sold on-site, so bring everything you need.
Summer Strategy
The nature center is air conditioned, but the trails get hot by midday. Visit in the morning (9-11 AM) during summer months. Fall and spring are perfect for a full day.
Bring Binoculars
The bird viewing area has scopes, but having your own binoculars for the trails makes a big difference. The canyon is a birding hotspot.
Water & Sunscreen
Bring water for everyone, even on cool days. Sunscreen and hats are essential year-round in SCV. The nature trail has shade, but the upper canyon is more exposed.
Donations Welcome
Admission is free, but donations support the animal care and educational programs. Drop a few dollars in the box -- it goes to a great cause.
A Piece of California History
Placerita Canyon holds a special place in California history. In 1842, Francisco Lopez (the mayordomo of Rancho San Francisco) stopped to rest under a large oak tree. While napping, he reportedly dreamed of gold. He woke up, dug under the tree with his knife, and found gold flakes clinging to the roots of wild onions. This discovery at what is now called the Oak of the Golden Dream predates James Marshall's find at Sutter's Mill by six years.
The oak tree still stands today, and a short walk from the nature center takes you right to it. A monument and interpretive sign mark the spot. It is a quick, easy walk that even the youngest kids can manage, and it adds a layer of history to any nature center visit.
