Seasonal Guide
Summer 2026 in SCV
Lake days, free concerts, golden-hour hikes, and patio dinners — summer is when Santa Clarita Valley truly shines. Here's your insider guide to making the most of every warm-weather moment.
Last updated June 22, 2026 · by Sam Silver
Santa Clarita Valley sits in a golden canyon at the edge of the Angeles National Forest, and summer is its peak season. The valley averages over 300 days of sunshine a year, and between June and September the thermometer regularly climbs into the mid-90s to low 100s — which means early-morning adventures, evening concerts, and lots of time near the water.
Whether you live here or you are thinking about moving, this guide covers everything happening in SCV this summer, from free community events to Sam's favorite insider spots. Bookmark it and come back throughout the season.
Concerts in the Park — 2026
Now in its fourth decade, SCV's most beloved summer tradition brings free live music to Central Park on eight Saturday evenings. Thousands of families spread blankets on the lawn, food trucks serve dinner before showtime, and the whole valley comes together under the stars.

Sam's Concert Night Tips: Arrive by 5:30 PM to claim a good blanket spot and grab dinner from the food trucks before the music starts. Bring low-back chairs (high backs block the view for people behind you), a light blanket, and sunscreen if you're setting up before sunset. The lawn fills up fast for popular acts — especially tribute bands with big followings. After the show, Main Street Newhall is a great place for a nightcap.
Water Sports
Lake Days at Castaic Lake
When summer heat settles over Santa Clarita, locals head 15 minutes north to Castaic Lake — a 323-acre reservoir that's the valley's premier water recreation destination. Boating, jet skiing, fishing, kayaking, swimming, and camping are all available, making it a full-day or weekend adventure.
The lower lagoon area has a designated swim beach that's ideal for families with kids. There's also a boat launch ramp for personal watercraft and boats. The upper lake is quieter and popular with fishermen. Either way, the surrounding hills provide a beautiful backdrop for a summer day on the water.
Pro tip from Sam: Go on a weekday if you can. Weekends at Castaic Lake get busy, especially during peak summer Saturdays. Arrive before 9 AM for the best parking and the calmest water.

Summer Hiking in SCV
Santa Clarita Valley has over 100 miles of trails — but summer hiking requires a strategy. With temperatures regularly hitting 95–105°F from June through September, timing is everything. Here's how to stay safe and enjoy the trails all summer long.
Start Before 8 AM
Summer mornings are glorious in SCV — 70°F with soft golden light and empty trails. By 10 AM the heat starts building, and by noon it's punishing on exposed terrain. Sam's rule: if you can't leave the trailhead by 7 AM, wait for evening.
Bring More Water Than You Think
Carry at least 2 liters of water per person for any summer hike — more for longer trails. Electrolyte packets are a good addition. There's no water on most SCV trails, and the dry heat dehydrates you faster than you realize.
Choose Shaded Trails
Stick to canyon trails with tree cover over exposed ridgelines in summer. Towsley Canyon, Placerita Canyon, and the shaded sections of the Paseo system are your best bets. Avoid wide-open hillsides where there's no shade for miles.
Evening Hikes Work Too
When the sun starts dropping after 6 PM, temperatures cool quickly. Evening hikes with golden-hour light are some of the most beautiful experiences in SCV. Bring a headlamp just in case — sunset comes fast in the canyons.
Haskell Canyon Bike Park
SCV's newest outdoor destination — 720 acres with 15+ miles of purpose-built trails. Mountain bikers and hikers share the park, and the canyon sections offer some shade. Hit it early in the morning for the best conditions.
Watch for Wildlife
Rattlesnakes are active in summer, especially on warm mornings. Stay on marked trails, watch where you step, and keep dogs on leash. Mountain lions are present but rarely seen — they generally avoid humans. If you see one, make yourself big and back away slowly.
Pools & Splash Pads
When the mercury hits triple digits, SCV's public pools and splash pads are the answer. The City of Santa Clarita operates several aquatic facilities and free splash pads throughout the valley — perfect for families, kids, and anyone looking to cool off without leaving town.
City Aquatics Programs
The City of Santa Clarita runs summer aquatics programs including open swim, lap swim, swim lessons, water aerobics, and family swim nights at community pools. The city's aquatic facilities typically operate from mid-June through early September.
City Parks & RecreationFree Splash Pads
Several SCV parks have free splash pads that operate during summer months — no admission required. Central Park, Canyon Country Community Park, and other neighborhood parks have water play features that are hugely popular with families. They typically run from Memorial Day weekend through mid-September.
Parks & Trails MapsHOA Community Pools
Many SCV neighborhoods — especially in Valencia, Stevenson Ranch, and Canyon Country — have HOA-maintained community pools and spa facilities. If you're moving to SCV, ask Sam about which neighborhoods have the best aquatic amenities. It's one of the perks of master-planned living.
Explore NeighborhoodsCastaic Lake Swim Beach
For a bigger water day, the lower lagoon at Castaic Lake has a designated swim beach with lifeguards during peak season. It's the closest thing to a beach day you'll find in SCV — bring sunscreen, a cooler, and make a full afternoon of it.
