Santa Clarita Valley is proud of its veteran community. This page honors those who serve and provides resources for veterans and their families living in the SCV.

From Sam

A Veteran's Perspective

As a veteran myself, I understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with military service. Transitioning to civilian life is a journey, and finding the right community makes all the difference.

Santa Clarita Valley has been home to a significant veteran community for decades. The valley's proximity to major military installations, combined with its excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, and strong community values, makes it a natural choice for veterans and their families.

This page is my way of giving back — connecting SCV's veteran community with resources, organizations, and each other. If you're a veteran looking to make SCV home, I'd be honored to help you find your place here.

"The veteran community in Santa Clarita is tight-knit and welcoming. When I coach Special Olympics or volunteer at Veterans Historical Plaza in Newhall, I see the same thing — neighbors showing up for each other. That's what makes this valley special, and it's why so many veterans choose to put down roots here."

Reddit-Sourced Tips & Hidden Gems

Real recommendations from real veterans on Reddit — firsthand tips from r/Veterans, r/VeteransBenefits, r/MilitaryFinance, r/army, and other military communities. These are the deals and hidden benefits that veterans actually use and recommend, not the ones you'll find on corporate websites.

Discount Platforms Veterans Swear By

These are the platforms that come up again and again in Reddit threads. A 12-year Army veteran's ranking on r/VeteransBenefits became one of the most-saved posts on the subreddit — here's why.

ExpertVoice

The #1 hidden gem according to Reddit veterans. Deep discounts (often 40–60% off) on outdoor gear, optics, and sporting goods from brands like Garmin, Osprey, and Smith. Veterans report saving hundreds on gear they'd buy anyway. Often runs special Veterans Day deals with even steeper cuts.

Reddit Favorite

GovX

Veterans on Reddit praise GovX for deals on apparel and tactical gear — 40–50% off brands like Patagonia and KÜHL. The catch: always price-check against other retailers. Some items are marked up before the "discount," so comparison shopping is key.

Price-Check First

AAFES Military Exchange Online

Reddit veterans consistently rank this as the best place for electronics and home goods. Tax-free shopping and aggressive sales often beat Best Buy and Costco prices by hundreds of dollars on TVs, laptops, and appliances. Open to all veterans with a military ID.

Best for Electronics

ID.me

Not a discount platform itself, but the verification key that unlocks military pricing at Nike (10%), Under Armour (40%), Adidas (30%), Apple (10%), and dozens more. Veterans recommend setting up your ID.me account once — it pays for itself immediately across all connected retailers.

Essential Setup

Apple Military & Veterans Store

Apple offers 10% off Mac, iPad, and accessories through their dedicated military and veterans store online. Reddit veterans note this stacks with education pricing in some cases. One of the few tech discounts that's easy to use and actually meaningful.

10% Off Apple

Under Armour: 40% Off

Veterans on Reddit rave about the Under Armour 40% military discount — one of the steepest year-round retail discounts available. Verified through ID.me. The catch: new releases are typically excluded, and it's online-only. But for everyday gear, it's unbeatable.

40% Off Year-Round

Hidden Gem Benefits

These are the benefits that veterans on Reddit say most people don't know about — the ones that often get the "I had no idea!" replies in comment threads.

Free Lifetime National Parks Pass

Every veteran with an honorable discharge can get a free lifetime America the Beautiful pass — unlimited access to all national parks, wildlife refuges, and federal recreation lands. One of the most-upvoted tips on r/VeteransBenefits. Pick it up in person at any national park entrance station or federal recreation site to avoid shipping delays.

Free Forever

Free Theme Park Days

SeaWorld and Busch Gardens periodically offer free admission for veterans plus up to 3 guests through their "Salute to Service" promotions. Reddit veterans提醒 to register early — spots fill up fast. These are separate from Six Flags' military discounts (which are available right here in Valencia).

Veterans + 3 Guests Free

50% Off National Forest Camping

The Veterans Annual Pass gets you 50% off camping and day-use fees at U.S. Forest Service campgrounds. Reddit veterans in Southern California love this for camping trips to Angeles National Forest and San Bernardino National Forest — both within easy driving distance of the SCV.

50% Off Camping

MWR & Shades of Green

The Shades of Green resort near Walt Disney World in Florida offers deeply discounted hotel stays exclusively for military members and veterans — often 40–60% below Disney resort rates. Reddit veterans also recommend checking MWR (Morale, Welfare & Recreation) centers for discounted travel, gear rentals, and event tickets.

Discounted Disney Stays

California-Specific Benefits

Benefits unique to California that veterans on Reddit say are easy to miss — especially if you've recently moved to the state.

CalVet Home Loans

State-funded loans with competitive rates, 100% financing, and built-in disaster insurance — a benefit unique to California veterans that's separate from federal VA loans.

Property Tax Exemption

100% service-connected disabled veterans can receive a property tax exemption of up to $180,671 on their primary residence (or up to $271,009 for low-income veterans).

Free CA State Parks Pass

Honorably discharged veterans with a service-connected disability qualify for a free lifetime California State Parks and Recreation pass — covers day-use fees at all 280+ state parks.

College Tuition Fee Waiver

Children and survivors of qualifying California veterans can receive tuition and fee waivers at California State University and University of California campuses — regardless of family income.

Military Retirement Tax Break

Starting 2025, California allows veterans to exclude up to $20,000 of military retirement and Survivor Benefit Plan pay from state income taxes, subject to income limits.

Free Hunting & Fishing Licenses

California offers reduced-fee or free hunting and fishing licenses for veterans with qualifying service-connected disabilities — a significant perk for outdoor enthusiasts in the SCV area.

Reddit Pro-Tips from Veterans

Always Price-Check GovX Deals

Multiple Reddit threads warn that GovX sometimes inflates MSRP before applying the military discount. Before buying, check the same item on Amazon, REI, or the brand's own site. The deals are real, but comparison shopping ensures you're actually saving.

Ask at Local SCV Businesses

The most consistent Reddit advice: small, locally-owned businesses often give unadvertised veteran discounts — you just have to ask. Restaurants, barbershops, auto shops, and gyms in the Santa Clarita Valley are frequently mentioned as surprisingly generous when you mention your service.

Set Up All Verification Accounts at Once

Don't sign up for ID.me, ExpertVoice, GovX, and WeSalute one at a time over months. Reddit veterans say to knock them all out in one sitting — it takes about 30 minutes and unlocks hundreds of discounts immediately.

Check AAFES Before Buying Electronics

"Remember to price-check AAFES for electronics" is practically a mantra on r/Veterans. Tax-free pricing on TVs, laptops, gaming consoles, and appliances means real savings — sometimes $100+ off compared to retail. Open to all veterans with valid military ID.

Know a deal we missed?
