Whitney Canyon Park Trail — SCV's Hidden Waterfall

Most people who visit Santa Clarita Valley know about Placerita Canyon and Towsley Canyon. But there's a third trail network that doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves — Whitney Canyon Park. Nestled right off the 14 freeway behind the Newhall Park & Ride, this 442-acre park features one of the most rewarding urban-proximate hikes in the entire valley, complete with a seasonal waterfall tucked deep inside a narrow canyon.
Sam has been hiking this trail with his family for years. "Whitney Canyon is special because it feels like you're miles away from everything, but you're actually five minutes from the freeway. The first time my kids saw the waterfall after a rain, their jaws dropped — it's that kind of hidden magic you don't expect to find in the suburbs."
Getting There
Trailhead: Whitney Canyon Park trailhead is located behind the Newhall Park & Ride, directly off the 14 freeway. From I-5, take the Newhall Avenue exit and follow the signs toward the park & ride lot.
Address area: 24255 The Old Road, Newhall, CA 91321 (near Ed Davis Park / Towsley Canyon entrance).
Parking: Free parking is available at the Newhall Park & Ride lot. The trail starts from the back of the lot.
When to Go
Best time for the waterfall: Late winter through early summer (January–June) when seasonal rains keep the creek flowing and the waterfall active. By mid-summer the falls typically dry up, but the hike is still worth doing for the canyon scenery.
Summer hiking: If you're visiting July through September, start before 8 AM to beat the heat, which regularly reaches 95–105°F. The canyon provides some shade, but exposed sections get hot by mid-morning.
Fall & Winter: The absolute best time for hiking Whitney Canyon — cool temperatures (60–75°F), golden light, and fewer crowds. First rains of the season in November–December can bring the creek back to life.
On the Trail
What to Expect on the Trail
The main Whitney Canyon Trail is a 2.9-mile out-and-back hike that follows the canyon floor through a beautiful oak forest. The trail is mostly easy to moderate, with a gentle grade and only about 400 feet of elevation gain — making it accessible for families with kids, casual hikers, and even trail runners.
What makes Whitney Canyon special compared to other SCV trails is the variety of vegetation. The canyon is thick with coastal sage scrub, chaparral, and mature oak trees that provide significant shade along the lower section. You'll cross the seasonal creek multiple times via stepping stones or small footbridges, and the sound of running water accompanies you for most of the first mile.
About halfway in, the canyon narrows dramatically. The walls close in, the vegetation gets denser, and the trail becomes more rugged. This is where the magic happens — the creek cascades over small rock ledges, and if you're lucky enough to visit after a good rain, you'll find the main waterfall at the turnaround point, a roughly 15-foot cascade over sandstone into a shallow pool below.
"The first time I took my kids here after a rain, we heard the waterfall before we saw it," Sam recalls. "They took off running down the trail, and when they rounded that last bend and saw the water coming over the rocks — it's the kind of moment that makes you grateful to live somewhere where this is your local hike."
The lower canyon trail is shaded by mature oaks and follows a seasonal creek — a welcome relief on warm days.
The Waterfall
The main attraction — a ~15-foot seasonal cascade over sandstone. Best January through June. After heavy rains, the flow is impressive enough to justify the hike on its own.
Oak Forest Canopy
The lower trail is one of the best-shaded hikes in SCV. Mature coast live oaks create a natural canopy that keeps temperatures significantly cooler than exposed trails.
Year-Round Hiking
Even when the waterfall is dry (late summer–fall), the canyon scenery, shade, and quiet make this a worthwhile hike. Fall offers golden light and perfect 60–75°F temps.

Water
Minimum 1 liter per person. The canyon is shaded but you'll still sweat.
Sun Protection
Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses. Some sections are exposed, especially upper canyon.
Good Shoes
Trail runners or hiking shoes with good grip. Creek crossings can be slippery.
Camera
The canyon light and waterfall are worth capturing. After rain is especially photogenic.

Whitney Canyon can get busy on weekend mornings, especially after rain when the waterfall is flowing. Sam recommends going on a weekday or arriving before 8 AM on Saturdays. The trail's proximity to the freeway means you can do the whole hike in under two hours and still have most of your day free.
