Hidden Family Hiking Trails in SCV
Everyone knows Towsley Canyon and Placerita Canyon. But Santa Clarita Valley has a collection of quieter, lesser-known trails that are perfect for families — shaded paths, gentle grades, and the kind of peaceful canyon scenery that makes you forget you're in the suburbs.

After 22 years of hiking Santa Clarita's trails, Sam knows which ones are worth your Saturday morning and which ones are better left to the Instagram crowd. Here are five trails that most visitors — and even many locals — haven't discovered yet. They're family-friendly, less crowded than the famous spots, and genuinely beautiful.
Santa Clarita Valley has over 100 miles of trails and 13,000+ acres of protected open space — that's a lot of hiking. The well-known trails like Towsley Canyon, Vasquez Rocks, and the Haskell Canyon Bike Park get most of the attention, and for good reason. But some of SCV's best family hiking is on trails that fly under the radar.
These five trails share a few things in common: they're shaded or partially shaded, they have gentle grades that work for kids and less experienced hikers, and they won't feel crowded even on a weekend morning. They're the kind of trails where you can actually hear the birds, watch a hawk circle overhead, and let the kids explore without worrying about mountain bikers flying past.
Hidden Gem · Newhall
Wildwood Canyon Open Space
Newhall · Moderate · 2–3 Miles · 1–2 Hours
If there's one trail on this list that deserves more attention, it's Wildwood Canyon. Tucked behind the neighborhoods of Newhall, this hidden gem offers shaded trails through mature oak groves, seasonal creek crossings, and a ridgeline viewpoint that delivers panoramic valley views — all without the crowds you'll find at the more famous canyon hikes.
The main trail follows a gentle grade through the canyon floor, with the tree canopy providing natural shade that keeps this trail noticeably cooler than exposed ridgelines. As you climb toward the ridgeline, the views open up to reveal the full sweep of the Santa Clarita Valley — from the San Gabriel Mountains to the east to the Sierra Pelona range to the north.
Wildwood Canyon is especially good for families with kids who are ready for a slightly longer walk but aren't ready for the steep grades of Towsley Canyon. The terrain is varied enough to keep it interesting — creek beds, oak groves, open meadows — but gentle enough that a 7 or 8-year-old can handle it without complaints.
Sam discovered this trail years ago and still considers it one of his personal favorites. "Most people in Newhall don't even know this trail exists," he says. "That's part of the charm."

Sam's Tip
"Wildwood Canyon is my secret recommendation for families who've done Placerita and want something a little more adventurous without being too challenging. The ridgeline view is one of the best in the valley."
What Makes It Special
The Central Park Trail is the trail most SCV residents drive past every day without realizing it's there. It's a 3.1-mile cross-country loop that starts near the main parking area at Central Park and winds through the open space behind the park's sports fields and lake.
The trail includes a new connection to Newhall Ranch Road and a 172-step exercise staircase that's become a popular fitness challenge for locals. The staircase isn't for small kids, but the rest of the trail is gentle and family-friendly — wide, well-maintained, and offering views of the surrounding hills.
Family-Friendly Features
- 3.1-mile loop — easy to shorten or extend
- Paved and dirt sections mixed
- Views of Central Park lake and sports fields
- Exercise staircase for older kids and parents
- Ample parking at Central Park main lot
Underrated · Valencia
Central Park Trail
Central Park, Valencia · Easy to Moderate · 3.1 Miles · 1.5–2 Hours
Most people come to Central Park for the playground, the sports fields, or the summer Concerts in the Park. But the park also has a 3.1-mile cross-country trail that's one of the best easy hikes in the valley — and one that most SCV residents have never walked.
The trail loops through the open space behind the park's main recreation areas, climbing gently to a ridgeline with views of the valley before descending back toward the lake. The terrain is a mix of packed dirt and paved sections, making it accessible for a wide range of abilities. There's also a 172-step exercise staircase along the ridgeline that adds a fitness challenge for anyone who wants it.
The beauty of this trail is its accessibility. You're already at Central Park — the parking is free, there are restrooms, a playground for younger kids, and the lake for a post-hike picnic. It's the perfect "let's get some exercise without driving anywhere" option for Valencia families.
For Young Explorers
Canyon Nature Center — Heritage Trail
Towsley Canyon · Easy · 1 Mile Loop · 30–45 Minutes
The Canyon Nature Center in Towsley Canyon is one of SCV's best-kept secrets for families with younger children. The Heritage Trail is a gentle 1-mile loop that winds through the canyon with educational signage about native plants, local wildlife, and the natural history of the Santa Clarita Valley.
The nature center itself offers guided tours and educational programs that are free and open to the public. Kids can learn about the native oak woodlands, spot lizards and birds along the trail, and explore the canyon environment in a safe, structured setting. It's the kind of place where a 5-year-old can feel like a real explorer.
The trail is short enough that even toddlers can handle it, but interesting enough that older kids won't be bored. The educational signage turns a simple walk into a learning experience — a rare combination that makes this one of Sam's top recommendations for families visiting SCV for the first time.
"If you've got kids under 10 and you want to show them what Santa Clarita's natural landscape looks like, this is where you start," Sam says. "The nature center staff are fantastic, the trail is easy, and the whole experience is free."

Insider Detail

Trail Features
Sam's Tip
"This is the trail I recommend for families who want to combine a bike ride with a walk. You can do a shorter section — even just 2 miles out and back — and it's flat enough for kids on bikes. In spring, the creek runs and the wildflowers are beautiful."
Paved & Accessible
San Francisquito Creek Trail
Valencia / Saugus · Easy · 7.8-Mile Loop · 2–4 Hours
The San Francisquito Creek Trail is one of the longest paved multi-use trails in the valley — a 7.8-mile loop that follows the creek through Valencia and Saugus. Unlike the canyon hikes that dominate SCV's trail scene, this is a flat, paved path that works for walkers, joggers, cyclists, and families with strollers.
The trail follows San Francisquito Creek through a mix of residential and open-space areas, with several access points along the route. You don't have to do the full 7.8 miles — most families do a shorter out-and-back section, and the flat terrain makes it easy to turn around whenever you want.
The trail is especially pleasant in spring when the creek runs and wildflowers bloom along the banks. In summer, the early morning hours before the heat builds are the best time to walk it — the path is mostly exposed, so shade is limited. But in the golden hour of late afternoon, the creek-side setting is genuinely beautiful.
For families with kids on bikes, this is one of the best options in SCV. The paved surface is smooth, the grade is flat, and the multiple access points mean you can start from a convenient location and ride as far as you want.
History & Nature
Hart Park Trail Loop
William S. Hart Park · Easy · 1.86 Miles · 45–60 Minutes
William S. Hart Park is one of SCV's most beloved community spaces — a 265-acre park with a natural history museum, a historic mansion, free hiking trails, and a herd of bison that graze in the park's meadows. The Hart Trail Loop is an easy 1.86-mile path that winds through the park's open space, past the bison enclosure, and along the park's creek.
This is one of the most unique hikes in the valley because of the bison. The herd has been part of the park since the 1960s, and seeing them grazing in the meadow as you walk the trail is a genuinely unexpected experience. Kids love it — it turns a simple park walk into something memorable.
The trail itself is easy and well-maintained, with gentle grades and a mix of dirt and paved sections. The park also has restrooms, picnic areas, a playground, and the Hart Museum (free admission) — making it easy to turn a trail walk into a full morning or afternoon outing.
Sam recommends combining the Hart Park loop with a visit to the natural history museum. "The bison alone are worth the trip," he says. "But the museum is genuinely good — it tells the story of William S. Hart, one of the first silent film western stars, and the history of this valley. Kids and adults both enjoy it."
Hart Park Extras
Full Day Outing
Combine the Hart Trail Loop with the museum, a playground visit, and a picnic. It's one of the best free family outings in the valley — and most SCV residents don't take advantage of it nearly enough.
