Race Day: Sunday, November 15

The Valley's Homegrown Marathon

The Santa Clarita Marathon is the biggest running event of the SCV year, and it is produced by Elite Sports California from a start and finish at Heritage Park, 24155 Newhall Ranch Road. Four distances go out the same morning: the full marathon at 7:00 AM, the half marathon at 7:15 AM, the 10K at 7:30 AM, and the 5K at 7:45 AM. Every race hugs the Santa Clarita bike path and paseo network, which means no auto traffic on the course, a rare treat for a city race.

The full course is USATF-certified (certificate #CA23032TEB) and a Boston Qualifier, and it works like two loops of the half marathon course. Runners get a generous seven-hour time limit, so walkers and first-timers have real room to finish, and water, aid, and porta-potties appear roughly every 1.5 miles along the way. November mornings in the valley typically sit in the mid-40s to low 60s, close to ideal racing weather.

On Course

How the Course Works

All four races start and finish at the large field at Heritage Park and run the Santa Clarita bike path and paseo network, a gently rolling loop with no traffic lights and no cars on the course. Mile markers line the route, volunteers staff the major turns, and both aid stations and restrooms sit at roughly 1.5-mile intervals, with the park's permanent bathrooms available at the start and finish.

Because the full marathon is two loops of the half course, the relay-style pace strategy is simple: hit your half-split comfortably and repeat it. Half and 10K runners see the finish area twice, which keeps spectators close to the action all morning.

An early-start option exists for runners who need to be on course before full setup. Water stations are not fully in place until around 7 AM on race morning, so early starters should carry their own hydration, per the race organizers.

Finisher Swag & Post-Race

Medal, shirt, hat, tote & street tacos

Finishers earn a medal, a premium sublimated finisher shirt, an event-logo hat, and a reusable tote. Awards go to the top three overall men and women in each distance, and the finish line serves post-race street tacos, which has quietly become the most discussed part of the day.

Registration & Budget

Roughly $65 to $165 by distance

Entry fees have historically run about $65 to $165 depending on distance and how early you register, with the full marathon at the top of that range. Fees creep up as race day nears, so Sam recommends entering at the early-bird tier. Check the official site at santaclaritamarathon.org for the current price schedule.

Sam's Race Weekend Tips

  • Stay in the valley Friday and Saturday night; the 7 AM start means a very early alarm.
  • Layer up at the start. Mid-40s feels cold at 6:45 AM, warm by mile two.
  • Walkers and first-timers: the 7-hour limit is your friend, take the whole thing in.
  • Spectators: park early and camp at the finish field, the loop brings runners by twice.
For Spectators

Where to Watch the Marathon

Heritage Park's big open field is the spectator hub. The loop course keeps most of the action in sight, and the uninterrupted start and finish are ideal for family cheer squads. The park also has plenty of lawn for chairs and blankets, so treat it like a tailgate: arrive by 6:30 AM, grab coffee from a nearby Valencia spot, and settle in for the waves.

Caffeine First

Hit one of the local coffee counters in Valencia before the 7 AM gun, see the best coffee guide.

Claim a Spot

Set up on the finish-field lawn with chairs early; the loop means runners pass twice.

Stay for Brunch

Make a Sunday of it. See the best brunch guide for post-race fuel.

Why Sam loves this race: it is the one day a year the whole valley shows up to run its own streets, and it shows off everything that makes SCV livable, the paseos, the parks, the community that lines the course. I tell every moving-to-SCV family to come watch it once, even if nobody in the house runs. It sells the valley better than any brochure.

More Fall Race Season

Race month in SCV is packed. Catch the Halloween-costume Finish The Ride & Finish The Run on October 25, plan around Jingle Fest weekend, November 13-15, and see the full fall 2026 guide for everything between now and Thanksgiving.
