Season opens late November Sam Silver 5 min read
Santa Clarita is one of the best-served corners of Southern California when it comes to Christmas trees. Within a 20-minute drive you can cut your own Monterey pine at a real forest, pick a fresh-cut Oregon noble or Nordman fir at a working farm with barn animals, or grab a no-fuss pre-cut tree at a neighborhood lot. Most farms post their exact opening dates each fall, and several open right after Thanksgiving. Here is where the valley buys its trees, plus Sam's tips for getting the freshest one.

Picking the Freshest Tree
- Measure first. Bring the ceiling height and the tree stand dimensions. Eight feet sounds big until it is in your living room.
- Check for freshness. Run a hand along a branch: needles should stay put, not rain off. Give the trunk a sniff; a fresh cut smells strongly of pine.
- Ask for a fresh cut. Most farms and lots will re-cut the trunk base before you load up. It opens the pores so the tree drinks water all season.
- Time it right. Cut trees last about four to six weeks indoors. Late November to early December is the sweet spot for most families.
Pair the Tree Run With SCV Holiday Magic
- Light Up Main Street in Old Town Newhall on Saturday, November 21: five blocks of lights, real snow, and the 5:30 PM tree lighting. The full guide has everything.
- Festival of Trees at the Canyon Country Community Center, November 20-22: decorated trees, wreaths, and gingerbread for the Boys & Girls Club.
- Holiday in the Park at Six Flags Magic Mountain starts the week of Thanksgiving, with shows, lights, and Santa on roller coasters.
- Neighborhood lights start going up right after Thanksgiving. The holiday light displays guide collects the best streets to drive.
Sam's Holiday Take
"Every December I meet buyers who fell in love with Santa Clarita because of a holiday like this: a farm full of trees, a Main Street lit five blocks deep, and neighbors who wave from every porch. This is the season that sells the valley, and I still love showing it off."
