A day of competition, community, and pure joy as athletes from across the region gather for the Special Olympics bowling tournament right here in Santa Clarita.

From the Sidelines

Today, I had the honor of coaching at the Special Olympics bowling tournament here in Santa Clarita. This is not a sponsored post or a promotional piece — it is a genuine, from-the-heart look at one of the most inspiring days our community has to offer. As a Special Olympics coach and a U.S. Army veteran, I can tell you without hesitation that these athletes teach me more than I could ever teach them.

The Event

Bowling for Gold, Community for Life

The Special Olympics bowling tournament happening today in Santa Clarita brings together over 80 athletes from several areas across Southern California, including Antelope Valley, Tehachapi, and Santa Clarita. It is a day of strikes, spares, and pure, unfiltered joy. Bowling alleys across the SCV are filled with the sounds of crashing pins, roaring cheers, and the kind of high-fives that leave your hand stinging and your heart full.

Athletes compete in singles, doubles, and team events — but the real competition is in who can smile the brightest, cheer the loudest, and celebrate each other's victories as if they were their own. And every single athlete walks away a champion, regardless of the scoreboard.

The energy in the building is electric. There is nothing quite like watching an athlete roll their ball down the lane, see the pins fall, and throw their arms up in triumph. The crowd erupts. Strangers become teammates. For one day, none of the usual barriers matter — only the joy of the game and the pride in every effort.

The Special Olympics Athlete Oath

"Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."

This oath, spoken by every Special Olympics athlete, captures the heart of the movement — courage, effort, and the dignity of showing up and giving your best, no matter the outcome.

Athletes Inspire
Why This Matters

More Than a Sport

Year-Round Training

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities. These athletes train hard, show up early, and give everything they have.

Inclusion & Community

It is about more than sports. It is about inclusion, confidence, and the power of community. Every athlete, every volunteer, every spectator leaves changed.

Incredible Determination

The athletes train with incredible heart and determination. They push through challenges, support one another, and remind us all what true sportsmanship looks like.

Celebration of Ability

This is a celebration of ability, not disability. Every athlete is a champion. Every effort is a victory. Every moment matters.

Personal Perspective

Why Sam Coaches Special Olympics

Coaching Special Olympics is deeply personal for me. As a U.S. Army veteran, I grew up believing in service before self. That value did not end when I left the service — it is how I live every day, whether I am helping a family find their dream home in Santa Clarita or standing on the sidelines cheering on an athlete who just bowled their personal best.

"Being a Special Olympics coach reminds me every day that the greatest victories aren't on a scoreboard — they're in the lives we touch. When you see an athlete's face light up because they did something they didn't think they could do, that's the real win. That's everything."

— Sam Silver, Special Olympics Coach

I have been involved with Special Olympics for years, supporting athletes both on and off the field. It is one of the most rewarding things I do, and it is a privilege to be part of these athletes' lives and their journey.

The Tournament

Pin Action, High Fives, and Pure Joy

Bowling is one of the most popular Special Olympics sports — and for good reason. It is accessible, it is fun, and it gives athletes of all ability levels a chance to shine. Today's tournament features over 80 athletes competing from Antelope Valley, Tehachapi, and Santa Clarita in singles, doubles, and team events, each one giving their absolute best.

The energy inside the bowling center is indescribable. Cheers echo off every wall. Teammates rush to give high-fives after every frame. Coaches crouch down to offer quiet words of encouragement. Parents wipe away tears of pride. And through it all, the athletes themselves carry the day with grace, joy, and a competitive spirit that puts the rest of us to shame.

Whether an athlete rolls a strike or picks up a single pin, the reaction is the same: celebration. Because in Special Olympics, every effort matters. Every frame is a victory. Every athlete is a champion — regardless of the score.
