From silent films to blockbuster movies and Netflix originals, SCV has been one of the most filmed places in California for over a century. Here is the story behind the valley's starring role in Hollywood history.

If you have ever driven through the Santa Clarita Valley and felt like a landscape looked familiar — a rocky outcropping, a dusty canyon road, a historic ranch house — you were probably right. Chances are excellent that you have already seen that view on a screen.
SCV has earned the nickname "Hollywood North" for good reason. Located within the studio-friendly "30-Mile Zone" from Hollywood, the valley offers diverse landscapes — from mountains and forests to deserts and rolling ranchlands — within a short drive. Film production here dates back to the silent film era, and today the valley is home to over 10 movie ranches, 50+ sound stages, and thousands of versatile filming locations.
As someone who has called SCV home for 22 years, I never get tired of spotting filming locations around town. Whether you are a film buff, a new resident, or just curious, here is your guide to Santa Clarita's cinematic side.

Most Filmed Location
Vasquez Rocks Natural Area
10700 W. Escondido Canyon Road, Agua Dulce
If you have watched any TV or film in the past 50 years, you have seen Vasquez Rocks. Those dramatic, tilted sandstone formations have been one of the most recognizable filming locations in California for decades. The rocks served as a crossroads for trading routes for indigenous peoples for about 3,500 years before becoming a Hollywood staple.
The list of productions filmed here is staggering. Star Trek fans know it as the setting for the iconic episode "Arena" where Captain Kirk fought the Gorn. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, Blazing Saddles, The Flintstones, Army of Darkness, Westworld, and scenes from nearly every major Western ever made all filmed at Vasquez Rocks. More recently, it has appeared in Rick and Morty, Stranger Things, and countless Marvel productions.
Today, Vasquez Rocks is a Los Angeles County park open year-round. It is a favorite spot for hiking, rock climbing, and photography. And yes — you can stand where Captain Kirk fought the Gorn. Sam recommends visiting on a weekday morning for the best light and smallest crowds.
Silent Film Era
William S. Hart Park & Museum
24151 Newhall Avenue, Newhall
The park itself is named after one of Hollywood's first major movie stars. William S. Hart was the original cowboy film star — a silent film actor who made over 70 Westerns between 1914 and 1925. His 22-room Spanish Colonial Revival mansion sits on the 265-acre property, now preserved as a museum by the County of Los Angeles.
Hart's mansion houses one of the finest collections of Western art in the country, along with Native American artifacts, antique firearms, and personal memorabilia from Hart's film career. The property also includes a herd of American bison (descendants of the bison used in Hart's films), making it a living piece of Hollywood history.
Hart Park has continued as a filming location in the modern era. It appears in everything from music videos to HBO series, and the annual Hart of the West Pow Wow (October 3-4, 2026) brings thousands of visitors to the park for a celebration of Indigenous cultures, traditional dance, drumming, food, and community. It is one of Sam's favorite events of the year.
SCV's Movie Ranches
The valley is home to over a dozen working movie ranches — large properties that function as permanent outdoor film sets. These are where many of your favorite shows and movies are actually shot.
Sable Ranch
One of the most famous movie ranches in California. Originally developed by Western film star Roy Rogers, Sable Ranch has been used in countless productions including National Lampoon's Vacation, The A-Team, 24, and Bones. Its versatile terrain includes a Western town, a lake, and wooded areas.
Melody Ranch
Located in Placerita Canyon, Melody Ranch is a historic 11-acre movie set that dates back to the 1930s. It was the home base for Gene Autry's films and TV series, and more recently served as the primary set for HBO's Deadwood. Currently in use by various productions. A true piece of Hollywood history.
Blue Cloud Movie Ranch
A 100-acre ranch in Agua Dulce used for both exterior and interior filming. Features a Western street, a lake, a waterfall, and a chapel. Productions that have filmed here include The Color Purple, Arrested Development, and numerous commercials and music videos.
Creative Capital
CalArts: Disney's Creative Legacy in SCV

The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is one of the most prestigious art schools in the world — and it calls Valencia home. Founded by Walt Disney in 1961 as a merger of the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and the Chouinard Art Institute, CalArts moved to its current Valencia campus in 1971.
CalArts has produced an incredible roster of alumni who have shaped modern entertainment: Tim Burton, John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Don Cheadle, Ed Harris, and countless animators, filmmakers, and artists who have defined the visual language of modern cinema. The school's presence in SCV is a major reason the valley has such a strong creative community.
The campus itself is architecturally striking — a distinct mid-century modern complex designed by Ladd & Kelsey. CalArts holds regular art exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, and theater performances that are open to the public. It is worth checking their events calendar for student showcases.
Modern Productions in SCV
Film and TV production in Santa Clarita is not just history — it is very much alive today. The valley's 50+ sound stages and versatile locations make it a go-to destination for modern productions.
Reality & Competition Shows
Several major reality and competition shows film regularly in SCV. Wipeout, The Amazing Race, and multiple Netflix competition series have used the valley's sound stages and backlots. The open space and studio infrastructure make it ideal for large-scale productions.
Streaming Originals
Netflix, Amazon, Apple TV+, and other streaming platforms regularly film in SCV. The valley's proximity to LA combined with its range of locations — from suburban neighborhoods to wilderness areas — makes it a favorite for streaming productions looking for authentic, diverse settings.
Music Videos & Commercials
Vasquez Rocks, the movie ranches, and SCV's open desert landscapes appear in dozens of music videos every year. The valley is also a popular location for national TV commercials — you might recognize that canyon road or ranch house from a car ad or beer commercial.
