What to Know About the Pow Wow
The Hart of the West Native American Pow Wow is an annual gathering held at William S. Hart Park in Santa Clarita. For two days each October, the park transforms into a vibrant celebration of Indigenous culture that welcomes visitors from across Southern California.
This is not a performance for tourists. It is a genuine cultural gathering where multiple Indigenous nations come together to share their heritage through traditional dance, drumming, storytelling, and art. Visitors are welcomed as guests and invited to observe, learn, and appreciate.
The 2026 edition takes place Saturday and Sunday, October 3-4, with the Grand Entry ceremony typically happening at noon each day. The Grand Entry is a powerful moment when all participating dancers enter the arena in full regalia, led by veterans carrying the flags. It is not to be missed.

What to Expect at the Pow Wow
If you have never been to a pow wow before, here is a primer on what to expect and how to be a respectful guest.
Drumming & Singing
The heartbeat of every pow wow is the drum. Drum groups sit in a circle and sing traditional songs that accompany the dancers. The rhythm is powerful and grounding. Feel free to sit and watch for as long as you like.
Traditional Dancing
Dancers of all ages wear beautifully crafted regalia that represents their tribal heritage. Each dance style has meaning and history. Men's Fancy Dance, Women's Jingle Dress, and Intertribal dances welcome everyone to participate.
Arts & Crafts Vendors
Browse authentic Native American jewelry, beadwork, pottery, textiles, and artwork made by Indigenous artisans. This is a great place to find one-of-a-kind pieces and support Native artists directly.
Indigenous Food
Food vendors serve traditional Indigenous cuisine alongside festival favorites. Fry bread is a must-try. There are also Indian tacos, buffalo burgers, and other regional specialties that you will not find at your average food festival.
Honoring Ceremonies
Throughout the weekend, the pow wow includes special honoring ceremonies for veterans, elders, and community leaders. As a U.S. Army veteran myself, I find these moments deeply moving. The respect shown to those who served is palpable.
Community Gathering
Above all, the Hart of the West Pow Wow is about community. Indigenous and non-Indigenous people come together to celebrate, learn, and connect. You will see multi-generational families, elders passing traditions to youth, and new friendships forming.
Be a Good Guest
Pow Wow Etiquette for First-Timers
If this is your first pow wow, a few guidelines will help you be a respectful guest:
- Stand for the Grand Entry. When the flags and dancers enter the arena, everyone stands out of respect. This includes the U.S. flag, tribal flags, and the Prisoner of War / Missing in Action flag.
- Ask before taking photos. Many dancers and vendors are happy to be photographed, but always ask first. Never photograph sacred ceremonies without permission.
- Do not touch regalia. The dance regalia is ceremonial and often contains sacred items. Admire from a respectful distance.
- Stay seated during dances. If you are sitting in the arena seating area, remain seated while dances are in progress. Standing blocks the view of others.
- Listen to the Master of Ceremonies. The MC will guide the flow of events, announce dance categories, and explain what is happening. They are your best resource for understanding the proceedings.
- Bring cash. Many vendors prefer cash for food, crafts, and donations.
About William S. Hart Park
William S. Hart Park is one of Santa Clarita's most beloved public spaces. The 270-acre park features sprawling green lawns, ancient oak trees, hiking trails, a small zoo, and the historic Hart Mansion. It serves as the perfect backdrop for the Hart of the West Pow Wow, with its natural amphitheater-like setting and plenty of space for the arena, vendor booths, and seating areas.
Named after silent film star William S. Hart, who donated his ranch to the county, the park has been a gathering place for the SCV community for nearly a century. The pow wow is one of its most important annual events.
Plan Your Visit
Tips for making the most of the Hart of the West Pow Wow weekend from someone who has been there.
Arrive Early
The Grand Entry at noon is a don't-miss moment. Arrive by 11 AM to find parking, get settled, and explore the vendor area before the ceremonies begin.
Bring a Chair
Seating fills up fast. Bring your own lawn chairs or blankets for the best viewing experience. The arena is large, so arriving early helps you claim a good spot.
Sun Protection
October in SCV still brings warm sun. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water. The arena area is outdoors with limited shade.
Bring an Open Mind
The pow wow is not just a spectator event. You are invited to learn, ask respectful questions, and participate in intertribal dances when they are announced. It is a welcoming community.
