Swimming Beaches & Water Access
Castaic Lake has two main swimming areas on the Upper Lake. The Lagoon is the most popular spot -- a designated swimming area with a sandy beach, lifeguards on duty during summer months, and calm, shallow water that is perfect for families with younger kids. There are picnic tables, shade structures, and plenty of grass for spreading out blankets.
The Day Use Area on the east side of the lake offers additional beach access with a smaller swimming zone. It tends to be less crowded than the Lagoon, especially on weekdays. Both areas have restrooms and nearby parking.
Sam's tip: arrive before 10 AM on summer weekends to claim a good spot. The Lagoon fills up fast on Saturdays and Sundays. Weekdays are significantly quieter and more relaxing.
Boating, Paddleboarding & Kayaking
Castaic Lake is the best place in the Santa Clarita Valley for getting out on the water. Whether you bring your own boat or rent onsite, the lake offers miles of navigable water with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Powerboats & Jet Skis
The Upper Lake allows motorized boats. There are two boat launch ramps with plenty of parking for trailers. Skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing are all popular here. Rental options are limited onsite, but several nearby marinas offer boat rentals. Bring your own or check with Castaic Lake Recreation for current rental options. Gas-powered engines are permitted, but noise restrictions apply near swimming areas.
Sailboats & Sailboarding
Castaic Lake has a strong sailing community. The Castaic Lake Sailing Association maintains a fleet and offers membership. The lake gets consistent afternoon breezes that create excellent conditions for both sailboats and windsurfing. The sailing club is active and welcoming to newcomers. Sam has seen regattas on the lake that rival any coastal venue.
Kayaks & Paddleboards
Paddleboarding and kayaking are among the most popular activities at Castaic Lake. The Lower Lake (no-wake zone) is ideal for a peaceful paddle. You can rent paddleboards and kayaks at the Castaic Lake Rental Center near the Lagoon. Rates are reasonable and life jackets are included. Sam's favorite activity: paddleboarding at sunset when the water is glass and the hills turn gold.
Castaic Lake Boat & Watercraft Rentals
The Castaic Lake Recreation Area operates a rental center at the Upper Lake with paddleboards, kayaks, and pedal boats available by the hour or half-day. Pontoon boat rentals are also available for larger groups. Rates vary by season. Call ahead or check the LA County Parks website for current availability and reservations.
Fishing at Castaic Lake
Striped bass, largemouth bass, catfish, trout, bluegill & crappie
Castaic Lake is one of Southern California's premier freshwater fishing destinations. The lake is regularly stocked and the fishing is excellent year-round. The Lower Lake (no-wake zone) is particularly popular for shore fishing, while the Upper Lake attracts boat anglers chasing trophy stripers.
Striped bass are the main draw at Castaic -- the lake produces monster stripers that draw anglers from across the region. Largemouth bass are abundant in both the Upper and Lower lakes. The lake is also stocked with rainbow trout during the cooler months (typically October through April). Channel catfish, bluegill, and crappie round out the species list.
A California fishing license is required for anyone 16 and older. Licenses are available online from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife or at local sporting goods stores. Sam's tip: early morning and late evening are the best times to fish, especially during summer when the midday heat pushes fish deeper.
Best Fishing Spots at Castaic
Lower Lake Shoreline
Best for shore fishing. Walk the banks near the dam and the inlet channels. Good for trout and catfish.
Upper Lake Points & Coves
Boat access. The coves on the west side hold bass year-round. Try drop-shot and Carolina rigs for stripers.
Dam Area
The outflow area below the dam has consistent current and attracts feeding fish. Shore access available.
Hiking Around Castaic Lake
The hills around Castaic Lake are crisscrossed with trails that offer panoramic views of the water and the surrounding mountains. These are Sam's favorite hikes in the area.
Castaic Lake Loop Trail
Moderate · 5.5 miles · 2-3 hours. A loop trail that circles the Lower Lake with consistent lake views. Shaded in sections, open in others. Great for a morning hike before the summer heat kicks in. Bring binoculars for birdwatching.
Pine Ridge Trail
Moderate · 3.5 miles one way. Climbs from the Lower Lake to the ridge above the Upper Lake with sweeping views of the entire reservoir. The payoff at the top is one of the best panoramas in the SCV area. Best in spring and fall when temperatures are mild.
Castaic Dam Overlook
Easy · 0.5 miles. A short paved path from the parking area to the top of the dam. Accessible and rewarding -- the view from the dam looking south over the Lower Lake and the valley is spectacular at sunset. Perfect for families with young kids.
Camping at Castaic Lake
For the full Castaic experience, camp overnight. The lake has two campgrounds operated by LA County Parks, plus a few private options nearby. Nothing beats waking up to a lake view and the smell of pine and sage.
Castaic Lake Campground (Upper Lake)
The main campground on the Upper Lake with 65+ sites. Tent camping, RVs (with hookups), and group camping available. Each site has a fire ring, picnic table, and access to restrooms with showers. The campground is set among oak trees on a hillside above the lake. Reservations are highly recommended, especially in summer and on holiday weekends.
Castaic Lake Campground (Lower Lake)
A smaller, quieter campground near the Lower Lake. Fewer sites (about 30) and a more rustic feel. No RV hookups here, but tent campers and self-contained RVs are welcome. This is Sam's pick for a quiet weekend escape -- the Lower Lake side is less developed and feels more like true camping.

"Spring and fall are the best camping seasons at Castaic. Summer is popular but can be hot. Reserve your site at least two weeks in advance for summer weekends. And bring a pair of binoculars -- the birdwatching at dawn is incredible."

Picnic Areas & Family Facilities
Castaic Lake is one of the best family destinations in the Santa Clarita Valley. The picnic areas are well-maintained, with tables, grills, shade structures, and playground equipment at several locations.
The Lagoon area has the best family setup: a large grassy lawn leading to the sandy beach, shaded picnic tables, and a playground. The Day Use Area near the Upper Lake boat launch also has picnic facilities. Both areas have restrooms and drinking water available.
For bigger groups, reservable group picnic areas are available. These come with extra tables, grills, and electrical hookups. Perfect for birthday parties, family reunions, or company picnics. Book through the LA County Parks website.
Know Before You Go
Hours
Castaic Lake Recreation Area is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Hours vary slightly by season. The entry gates typically open at 6:00 AM and close at sunset. Last vehicle entry is 30 minutes before sunset.
Entry Fees
Vehicle entry: $5 on weekdays, $10 on weekends and holidays. Pedestrians and cyclists: $1. Annual passes available for frequent visitors. Cash and card accepted at the entrance kiosk.
What to Bring
Water (lots of it), sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, swimsuits, towels, water shoes (the beach can be rocky), snacks or a picnic lunch, folding chairs, and shade umbrellas. Fishing gear if you plan to fish.
Important Rules
Glass containers are prohibited. Alcohol requires a permit. Dogs must be leashed at all times and are not allowed on swimming beaches. No fireworks. No overnight parking without a camping reservation. Fireworks are strictly prohibited.
Getting There
Directions to Castaic Lake
Castaic Lake is located about 15 minutes north of central Santa Clarita and 45 minutes northwest of downtown Los Angeles. From the I-5 freeway, take the Lake Hughes Road exit and follow the signs to the lake.
